The objective of the training:

Enhancing knowledge and raising awareness in the media sector on gender, gender related violence, and reproductive and sexual health issues.

Promoting reproductive health, sexual health and gender issues using the media and preparing the media workforce in these issues using practical methods, where they will use these tools learnt in their profession as journalists, enabling them to deliver information to the public in correct scientific manners, and providing them with strong backgrounds in the issues that were presented in the training.

The Institute of Modern Media/ AlQuds University contributed to a training course along with the PFPPA on the topic of reproductive health, sexual health, gender and media.

The PFPPA began training with the subject of reproductive and sexual health. The trainees were trained by Dr. Suad Al-Khodari, and the trainees, whom all have media backgrounds, did not have any prior experience or know any details about the importance of reproductive and sexual health or the extent of their importance.  The significance of this training is its unique contribution to the Palestinian media.

The IMM is grateful to the PFPPA for raising awareness on sensitive subjects that are usually avoided by relevant institutions with the assistance of professionals that are trained and specialized in this field, and for clarifying the concept of reproductive health and sexual health, and bringing to light the situation and role of Palestinian women in the family.

The presentation of the status of women was by Dr. Salwa Ayash wher she discussed with the trainers the Palestinian basic laws and the importance of their implementation on the ground. Dr. Salwa Ayash spoke about the content of the third draft of Palestinian constitution and about women in the Palestinian labour force.

Mahmoud Salem trained on sexually transmitted diseases and their diagnosis, including detailed methods of prevention and treatment. He focused on HIV/AIDS and methods of prevention.  Then Dr. Bashar AlKarmi presented the most impotant genetic diseases in Palestine the Tellasima disease. The training also focused on the important issue of gender and violence.

The media participants were also trained on the importance of media in delivering informative and effective messages to the public through training in audio, visual and written spots.

The trainer George Khleifi focused on the method of making a good spot.  Where the delivery to the public is accomplished through rapid and effective techniques that spark a positive change in the behaviors, lifestyles, and beliefs within the Palestinian family and society.

This training had outputs of 5 radio spots and 3 TV spots, these will be broadcast at the radio and TV stations which participants in the training are part of, and then will be distributed to all local stations, in order to reach the largest possible number of Palestinian audience.

Scenarios that the trainees designed under the supervision of the PFPPA deal directly with the issues of gender violence. It was taken into account while writing the scenarios for the spots the intention to cover all forms of victimization, threats, force, exploitation and deprivation of rights and freedoms, in order to deliver the right messages to the public.

Homework: Each participant or group of participants to write scenarios for the chosen subjects, and coming up with slogans.

Suggested topics which will be produced as spots

·        Sexual harassment ( radio / television )

·        Discrimination ( radio / television)

·        Murder against the backdrop of family honor

·        The equality between men and women at work

·        Participation (within the family)

The goals of the spots:

To make sure that this information will reach the largest number of people and in order to deliver massages with correct concepts, ideas and behaviors which the Palestinian local community need.

The short scenarios aim to deliver the information to the public in brief and enjoyable methods, where the viewers understand them and accept them.

IMM finished in the stage of producing the radio and TV spots and will constantly update PFPPA on progress and details of the production. Again, it is a pleasure for IMM to work with the PFPPA on this project and look forward to working together again in the future

The recommendations of the participants

·    Continue to work in this direction to develop capabilities

·  The Palestinian laws related to women do not provide enough opportunities to engage in topics and in greater depth.

·    Too much information was presented over a short period of time  which did not do enough justice to the topics

·    There is a need for more workshops to discuss more details on these topics

·    More courses and workshops related to the status of women and to strengthen their position

·    There is a need to build an information support system for all forms of discrimination and violence against women

·    Participate in the enactment of laws is need in order to protect women and get rid of discrimination against them.

·    The next workshops need to be more organized with increased time for lectures .

The results:

·    The participants had benefited from the issues raised in the training

·    The participants are able to use the scientific information in their field of media, they are working in local TV and radio stations and are linked directly with the public .

·    The successful extension of benefit and knowledge.
